MET GALA 2015

Gala-morous

Every year, the Met Gala proves to be one of the most unforgettable nights in fashion. It’s a night of sartorial risk taking, necessitated by a theme that usually promises the glowing success of some, and horrid failure of others (see the 2013 ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ theme). This year’s theme, ‘China: Through the Looking Glass,’ proved to be a celebration of the beauty and innovation of Chinese high fashion.

From capes to corsets, trains to tiaras Monday night saw the who’s who of fashion go out on several limbs in order to ensure that their appearance wouldn’t be forgotten, the only trick was to make sure it was memorable for the right reasons.

FKA Twigs in Christopher Kane

FKA twigs

Leah: It is one thing to push the boundaries of fashion, it is another to pull it off why looking effortlessly cool at the same time. Also while wearing what is essentially a renaissance dick pick #freethepeen

Fan BingBing – in Christopher Bu

FanBBMET

Leah: That beautiful cape, to the perfect hair and makeup. Words cant even describe

Grace: Usually its pretty hard to find a piece that could outshine a floor length sequined dress, but this cape is a work of art.

Jenifer Lawrence in a surprise designer

*insert dior spokesperson here*

Leah: Lol jk, she is wearing Dior… again. You would think that for a Dior spokesperson they would be kind enough to tailor it for her tbh

Cara Delevigne in Stella McCartney

same same, but different

Leah: I’m like 89% sure she wore this last year, but has just updated it with some funky themed tattoos. Recycle clothes, save the environment, wear lycra disco pants and call it ‘fashion’ etc etc.

Amal Clooney in Maison Margiela

AMAL

Grace: Truthfully, Amal could wrap herself in tin foil and still look gorgeous but from the scaly bodice to the layered skirt, this Margiela is incredible

Dakota Johnson in Chanel

MGDakota

Leah: Did she get lost on the way to the after party or….?

Grace: Ok Dakota, the movie’s out, you can stop wearing numerous shades of grey/silver.

Jessica Hart in Valentino

JessicaHartMET

Leah: This look could be overpowering; from the hair to the patterns, sequins and even the cat clutch. But some how she pulls it all together and nails the theme in one

Sarah Jessica Parker in H&M:

SJP

Grace: The dress is beautiful and goes perfectly with her smoky eyes, but the headpiece…I just cant stop getting YuGi-Oh vibes…

Alexa Chung in Erdem

ALEXA

Leah: Only Alexa could turn a floral bright pink tea dress into a ball gown and pull it off with pale flats.

Kris Jenner in Balmain:

MGKRIS

Grace: Here we have Kris again looking like neither a regular mom nor a cool mom. I did see a meme that compared this look to something from the wardrobe of Yzma from the Emperor’s New Groove, it made me chuckle, the fact that this is Balmain did not 😦

Leah: the feeling when your momanger steals from your wardrobe #awks

Emily Blunt in Prada

Emily Blunt

Leah: You can never go wrong with a cape at the Met Gala. Even though not in colours you would traditionally associate with China, the dress still holds true to the theme with its beautiful embroidery, patterns and then a modern twist on a traditional shape. After seeing red all night, this blue is a calming sight for sore eyes.

Miley Cyrus in Alexander Wang

MGMILEY

Leah: There is being edgy, and there is completely misinterpreting the theme. Props to Miley for doing a real life #tbt to the Punk Couture theme for Met Gala 2013

Grace: While I’m not a massive fan of the dress on Miley, I do think she went the right way about approaching the theme. Instead of awkwardly referencing a cliche, she chose to celebrate the designer who is of Chinese/Taiwanese descent.

Solange in Giles Deacon

SOLANGE

Grace: it’s been almost a week and I’m still undecided as to whether this is a hit or a miss. Either way, somebody call Han Solo because Solange has stolen the Millenium Falcon.

Rihanna in Guo Pei

rihanna-met-gala-2015

Leah: This outfit could have looked costuming really easily, but somehow Rihanna pulls it off flawlessly. She may have been compared to an omlet (among many things) in the process but one cannot deny that she is willing to take fashion risks (and memes) in the name of art.

Grace: There is a rare talent in being able to pull off big, statement dresses with lots of material (RiRi’s Grammys gown anyone?) and Rihanna has it down pat. This creation is just par for the course for Guo Pei however whose designs are always as big and bold as they are intricate and beautiful.

And finally, leaving with you this gem that the internet has cooked up
